MASTER OF THEOLOGY (Th.M.)
Program Overview
A student who holds a M.Div. degree or first graduate theological degree providing equivalent theological background—or its educational equivalent from approved institutions—receives the degree of Master of Theology (Th.M.) on the completion of the prescribed program of study.
To satisfy the Biblical languages requirement for the Th.M. program, the applicant must have the equivalent of the Greek and Hebrew requirements for the M.Div. or M.T.S. programs at TIS prior to admission.
The purpose of the degree of Master of Theology (Th.M.) is to increase the student’s knowledge of a major field of theological learning, particularly through training and practice in the use of the methods and tools of theological research and to prepare students for further advanced study at the Doctorate Degree.
Requirements for the Th.M. Degree
Successfully complete 42 semester units of the following coursework with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale include Complete 6 semester units of thesis and research project courses
Core Concentration
Each student may choose one of the four major areas of concentration for the Th.M. program:
1) Biblical Studies (OT and NT)
2) Historical Theology (Church History)
3) Theological Studies (Systematic Theology or Philosophical Theology)
4) Practical Theology (Christian Education, Mission, Pastoral Theology/Leadership)
Degree Requirements/ Time Limit
Successfully complete 42 semester units of the following coursework with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale include Complete 6 semester units of thesis and research project courses.
- Complete all financial requirements
- File an application for intent to graduate with the university office 8 weeks prior to graduation to certify that all graduation requirements have been met.
- Complete the degree requirements within the time limit.
- The Master of Theology program must be completed within 6 years from the time the student commenced the first course, as a regular student, which applies to the degree requirements.
Master’s Research Project
Students are required to complete a Master’s research project for Master’s degree in the form of a thesis and present it to the Master’s Research Evaluation Committee for approval during the student’s final semester at Tyndale Theological Seminary. Candidates for the Master’s Research Project are required to enroll in the following preparation course work of master’s research project and writing a thesis as an original project under the guidance of a faculty member.
